”I had made diptychs, both sides equal, triptychs, with three equal parts, Icon triptychs, with the sides equal to the center, and polytychs with four and five panels. In all of these, the panels were side-by-side against one another. I had never made a group of separated panels that were to be seen as a single painting. This happened by accident.”
“ I was having a large show at Ace Gallery, in Los Angeles. I had these small 21”x17” panels. I was afraid they would disappear into the huge crowd if hung low. So I hung them high; well above the heads of the crowd. Doug had a fit when he saw my installation. I insisted. After the opening he approached and said, “Your hanging was genius. Everyone thinks they are one painting. I sold it to the first guy for $10,000.00 (Peter Gould), the second guy for $12,000.00 and now I’m asking $15,000.00”. Which he got. I gradually made larger and larger 5 panel horizontal paintings. Then I made 3 panel vertical paintings: the GAWA’S. I then made 9 panel paintings, 3 across and 3 rows: AD OD. Finally, I made 15 panel paintings, 5 panels across, 3 rows: HOMAGE TO THE MUSE. All of these were shown at Ace Gallery, Los Angeles, in a show call PURE ODD. They were all pure colors in odd number arrangements. This show took up the entire gallery; all 35,000 square feet.“
